Hello kiddies!
Anywhoo, so as of late I had been thinking that although I have reviewed some table top games, deck builders, cooperative board games, etc. I haven't really reviewed or commented about family friendly games that EVERYONE in the family can enjoy.
My husband and I are avid table top gamers, more so than console, but we also like to take into account our 8 year old daughter.
The awesome part of table top gaming is not only the strategy and mechanics of game play, but it truly brings people together. There is table talk, and it is basicaly different personalities coming together and enjoying the same game.
Anywhoo, so I am aware that for many family games denote the traditional board games of yester year, like Monopoly, Guess Who, Sorry, etc. But now a days, there are many different kinds of table top games that younger players can join.
Here are some suggestions (that we have personally played, and our 8 year old has enjoyed so far):
Catan Junior- For those who have played Settlers of Catan, there is a compact version of this awesome games that 7+ players can enjoy. The board is smaller, but that doesn't mean that the play is less fun, it is just simply a compacted version of Settlers of Catan. Kids enjoy trading and buying goats, woods, etc. in order to build more castles and ships. The adults get the hang (for those who have not played) of the rules and game play, to the added bonus that they get to interact with their kids. This game is for 6+ years old.
Robot Turtles- This game isn't parents vs. kids, but parents make an important part of the game, because they are the ones who get to move and build the obstacles for the turtles to overcome. This game teaches basic coding principles and incorporates them into the game. The kids have a set of instructions (cards) and their goal is to get the gems that corresponds to their own turtle. Obviously like i mentioned there are obstacles, ice, boxes, etc. that the turltes have to either go around or move, and with the function cards. This game is enjoyable, as well instructional for future coders! This game is for ages 4+
Adorable Pandaring- This game is a card base game and it involves adorable and silly pandas which have rules and numbers. Depending on the Panda Law (which tells the players which kinds of pandas are adorable) players can get bamboo (which is how you win) and the players who reach 5 bamboos in one round win. This game is a bit more hard to understand, but it is fun and older children will have a ball playing these silly pandas. The game is from Asmadi Games, and it is 10+ years.
Croak- Is an excellent game that incorporates memory style play with introductory chess/checkers movements. Players get their queen froggy and her babies and they set up according to the rules. The point of the game is to have your queen or her froggies be the last ones standing. But, along the way, other players, or tiles can make it more interesting. There are tiles that have mud and the froggies can get stuck, other tiles have barracudas who will naturally eat your froggies and others have male frogs, those queen froggies can go to them and make more babies. It is a fun game, does not take a lot of set up and it is very enjoyable for both parents and kids. I really recommend it for family game night. This game is for 6+ years old.
Spot It!- This game is a bit different since it has different mini games tht can be played with the cards. The cards basically have matching pictures and one of the objectives of the mini games is to take as many cards from the center that have matching figure from the previous card tht the player takes. It is very easy to set up and the game play is not long. It is a fast game to take on raod trips, or vacations to keep the young ones distracted. This game is for 7+ years old.
Get Bit!- Is such fun game that entails robots (whose arms, legs, hands come off) and a shark. The point of the game is the players numbered cards corresponding to the color of their robots and basically they choose a number, which represents 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. place in the line. They then place the chosen card face down and reveal it once all the players have placed theirs. If they have matching card numbers with other players, their robots do not move in the line. But if they have different numbers, the robots get to be placed according to the number on the card. The last robot (nearest to the Shark) gets bitten and an arm, leg or hand gets detached. The point of the game is to be the last robot to survive without getting bitten off by the shark. This game is lots of fun (even more with more players) and it is quick, simple to understand. And most importantly, kids love making shark noises when they are chopping off the robots' limbs. This game is for 5+ years old.
Of course, there are many many more games that I did not get to mentioned, but for those who may be interested, these are some of the games that we have personally played and enjoyed along side our daughter. So, grab your little ones and make it a game night for everyone!!
