Hello my kiddies!!!
Normally, I don't like controversies and I try to steer away from subjects that might rattle people a bit. Specially when it touches beloved characters within the Geek Community.
But lately the treatment of this specific character has irked me enough that I need to share my opinion and get things off my chest.
So of whom am I referring about? None other than, Harleen Quinzel, aka, Harley Quinn.
Here is my take on latest developments of her character in the media.
For those who might not be fully aware of of her backstory, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was created by Paul Dini (with help of Bruce Time) when they were working on The Batman Adventures series ( subsequently translated to the t.v. show) for the episode of Mad Love, which that was translated directly from he issue of the same name.
She was created to be the manipulated hench woman to The Joker.
Her backstory is truly tragic, due to going from having a bright future as a psychiatrist into being emotionally, physically abused and manipulated by her abuser.her story is a cautionary tale of what a deranged psychotic abuser does to his victim and also how greed (In this case to trying to acquire notoriety by "curing" a dangerous criminal) can have ona unfortunate outcome.
Her character was made from the beginning to be tragic and was purposely made that way to emphasize, not only to emphasize her downward spiral, but the gruesome manipulation (emotional & physical) that the Joke is capable of.
Now here is some of the issues that I have had recently, in the New 52 treatment and in other recent storylines, Harley Quinn has been made to be an anti-hero of sorts, and she has been treated to be wanting to reedem herself and fight crime instead of being part of it.
Which in essence, that is not completely unbelievable due to the fact thT I do think she still might have some redeemable qualities, no less. The problem that since she has been under the control of Mistah J, one has to ask, how much of her humanity can be restored? Joker has done an excellent job to strip her of every ounce of sanity and humanity that she could have had. Making her go against her better judgement by committing heinous crimes, or at least facilitating him.
I'm not saying that storylines shouldn't be fluid, but specially in her case, one has to wonder how long will her "anti-hero" persona will she want to lead until, her darker nature re-ignited.
Can someone like Harley ever be truly good or will the years of her psychotic manipulation come back again?
Again, does the fact that Harley's character is being treated as an anti-hero really bothers me, no. I think it undermines her original intent, but it is a bit more understandable.
Then why am I whinning about?!😠😭
Well, it is the next bit that is the actual thing that seriously irks me...
Lately, many many women (and men too) have hashtag "relationship goals" all over social media and I'm left with a "say what?!" face 😐.
This has been more prevalent after the release of Suicide Squad recently and the radical treatment that the Joker-Harley relationship has been taken.
Like I mention making her an anti-hero for marketable and relatable purposes, is understandable, but I can never understand is the "romantic" treatment of the relationship they have made out her to have with her abuser.
Joker has absolute, zero capabilities to feel any connection whatsoever to ANYONE, let alone Harley.
He cannot love because he is a deranged, psychotic, sociopath that is beyond any form of redemption.
And by giving them a romantic relationship completely cheapens the value of this cautionary tale of total abuse.
In all the other media treatments of Mistah J and Harley, it has been emphasized how and to what extent their relationship is so warped and dangerously abusive.
He has mistreated, abused, raped Harley that, it is a complete horror.
But by making them be "lovey cover" well, let's by pass that this is in no way a relationship that ANYONE sane should aspire to, ever.
This "relationship" was meant to represent the worse of an unhealthy dynamic, it shouldn't be celebrated or even justified.
And I think that is what irks me the most, it is that by romanticizing something that should never be, it is giving women ( & men) the wrong message about what an actual healthy relationship should be.
Yes, this actually annoys me to the core because this is one of the things, that out of profitability and marketability, has been altered that people who are not fully aware ( those being introduced to the characters for first time) aware of the backstory have warped something that is not.
So, can we please, please stop using and sending the wrong message to people out there? Let's do the characters justice and portray their essence as they were meant to be portrayed.
This b.s. hashtag thing needs to stop. They're not relationship goals that anyone should aspire to, ever.
