I will make a quick confession, I have not yet been able to watch 'Deadpool' in theaters due to the fact that a couple of days before the release date, my stupid leg decided to suffer a tear on my meniscus and thus I will be needing surgery on March 1st.
THAT being said, for this post, I don't need to see it, just to comment on the obvious that many sources have been catching up on.
First of, a huge congratulations is in order to Ryan Reynolds & company for the overwhelming reception and blockbuster for 'Deadpool'. It is well deserved and a long time coming from the fiasco that was Green Lantern.
Now, ever since it was announced that there would be a Deadpool movie, many critics and fans, a like were vigilant from the get GO, whether the movie would have a R rating or would it cater more towards a PG or PG-13 rating, in order to make it more "kid" or "family" friendly.
For fans of the Deadpool comics, we seriously had our hopes up that, the studios would take into account that based on the comics, Deadpool by no means is a "kid" friendly comic. He is a nasty, vicious, demented anti-hero, who doesn't hesitate to crack inappropriate jokes about anyone or anything. But, that is the way we like him. Complete with flaws and all.
When it was finally announced that Deadpool indeed would carry a 'R' rating, many of us rejoiced, but for obvious reasons studios were weary, the effects (if any) this would have to the very lucrative 'superhero''/'comicbook" movies that are still in production or about to be released.
Fast foward to now, and seeing all the record breaking, record setting that this movie has made in only just the weekend alone of its release date, it is now setting a very posiive precedent for future movies of this genre.
But, what does all of this mean?
Adults, and mainly women as well, want to see comic book based movies, that are not just catered to "kids" "families". We WANT and obviously willing to spend our hard earned $$$ on more realistic, gritty movies based on morally ambigious, complex characters.
Don't get me wrong, Guardians of the Galaxy, Age of Ultron, Batman vs. Superman, Civil War, all these movies will still be woth seeing on the big screen whether or not they have a PG, PG-13, G, or any other rating, but the point that Deadpool has made is that studios so far have marketed and gained from these movies, mainly with younger children who look up to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc., but with Deadpool's release, it sends an even louder message that ADULT audiences are a formidable marketing force, that at times, is put aside, due to their surverys and researches, and at times we're given the short end of the stick.
Now, with an "R" rated movie, it is clear that WE also want more content that appeals to those who are in the 25-30+ year range. We want better quality storylines from our favorite characters. We want more complex, realistic plots, etc. Our superheroes, mutants, anti-heroes deserve better story and character developments.
This new precendence is quickly making it's mark on future releases, word on the grapevine is that studios seeing the overwhelming success this past weekend, have been in talk in possibly mkaing Rogue One and X-Force, Wolverine 3 have an "R' rating.
Whether or not (or at the end) the studio releases their productions with this rating, it has made the studios aware that they can be daring and produce quality superhero/comic book movies, without having to water down themes, due to their adult content.
Either way, I do hope I'm able to see Deadpool, even if I have to drag my gimpy butt to the theater, lol. For those who were lucky enough to see it, hope you enjoyed it!
