The Holiday season for most is actually over and while we had to deal with our crazy horde of relatives, I do hope that many of you spent the days with great food and company.
So, where have I bloody been?!? Well, real quick to recap, I started a new part-time job near my new abode, so unfortunately it has been a bit hectic around my household. Not to mention we were trying to get ready for the holidays.
Either way, I am back!!
For the most part we can collectively agree that 2016 has just been a $&1t year.
From start til now, there have been very few joyous moments throughout.
Except, a couple of weeks ago with the premier of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
🤗🤗 What's not to like about this film?! ( Unless you have no soul) it is absolutely fantastic. From start to finish, I was holding on to my breath ( miraculously, I didn't 💀).

Not only does it re-validates this franchise (cinematically speaking) but it adds so much more complexity to it.
For those of us born between 1977-1984ish this addition is perfect, it has the freshness of A New Hope, the darkness of Empire Strikes Back and the anticipation of Return of the Jedi.
Story wise, it is a story that many can relate to. The loss of family due to an injustice, a tyrannical government where most hope is lost, and a small band of Rebels who despite the odds, defie everyone and everything and make a significant impact on the outcome.
What drives the rhythm of the film is the characters and their interactions.

From Galen Erso's sacrifice to be re- recruited by Orson to Jyn finally realizing that she needs to finish her father's sacrifice in order to help the Rebel Alliance have a chance in defeating the Galactic Empire's Death Star, everything relies on characters' dinamic, backstories and interactions with each other.
Learning to trust, letting go of one's past, is key in Jyn and Cassian.
At the beginning, Jyn is basically out on her own and just wants to remain under the radar. She doesn't know why she's been left to her own defenses by Gerrera and all she knows is that her father is most likely dead. She mistrusts everyone (and with good reason) but once she realizes she has a motive to go on, and how important it is to carry on and fight, she learns to trust not only in her other Rogue One members but in herself.
Cassian being the mysterious Rebel Alliance Captain who is carrying a heavy (or heavier) burden, is introduced as a somewhat ruthless, 'get the job done, no matter what' cannot trust even his own shadow. But throughout the progression of the film, we get a glimpse of the heavy burden he has and how that conflicts with who he really is, or was at one point. By the end, he also has a metaphorsis and learns to trust and give a part of him that we did not see, until the end. Which makes this story the even more tragic. Yes, their heroism and sacrifice is eventually proven to be critical for the defeat of the first Death Star, but it also comes with a heavy price.
Imrrut Chimwe and Malbus were amazing characters who emphasized the best qualities within humanity. Trusting and having faith in something greater than oneself, trusting blindly (pardon the pun) in our companions, friends is a driving force for both characters. Of course Malbus is the more hesitant of the two, but at the end, he is able to channel his grief in order to complete his mission.
Due to the current state of the world this film is beyond inspiring, it is a reminder that we need to overcome our inner struggles and fight for what is just, fight for peace and never underestimate a small group of voices, because they can make a difference.
If you couldn't tell that I abso-freakin'-lutely LOVE this film, well, I do and did.
This is what good cinema and story-telling is all about.
I did cry tears, I laughed, and was genuinely came to care for the characters, I have no problem going to see it again.
Other favorite moments:
Seeing Darth Vader (and hearing James Earl Jones in the iconic role).
Grand Moff Tarkin was well done and respectfully played in Peter Cushing's absence.
And of course, how this film seemingly ties in with A New Hope and the quick excitement of seeing Carrie Fisher reprise her role as Princess Leia.
I absolutely had 🤓 moments, lol.
Btw, my new favorite droid is K-2SO!!
Now, if you guys aren't aware, most reviews/opinion pieces I do, I also try to do CONS, not because it means it was a horrible movie, but I do like to point out things that may not have made sense to me, or just maybe it could have been done differently.
Well, here goes.
For those of us born pre- episode 8 and who grew up with the EU as CANNON. Here is my beef, when the Disney acquisition took place and Disney decided to de- value the amazing story lines, Rogue One was part of it.
It is infuriating (at least how I see it) is that if you're going to de-value all of it, then bring back storylines as inspiration for episodes/movies, then it is all or nothing. Of course, Disney has a lot to work with, and they don't have to use EVERYTHING. But de-valuing storylines do not benefit anyone, specially the fans.
Again, that's just MY humble opinion. 😁
So, go do yourself a favor (if you haven't already) go watch Rogue One, it is definitely worth every single penny of your hard earned 💵.
Til' next time!
