Hello kiddies!!
So, I found an interesting article from moviepilot.com concerning the now long running sitcom The Big Bang Theory. It seems that there have been issues negotiating pay increases for both Kaley Cuoco (Penny) and Jim Parsons (Sheldon). According to the rumor mill and the article, season 11 was potentially in danger to not get green lit due to the negations. But alas, for now things seemed to have resolved and there will be a season 11 after all.
Now, I know that TBBT is a bit controversial in our community due to those Geeks who like the show and those who despise it.
The nay-sayers feel like the show derives on moving and further stereotyping the community. They are vocal against the fact that the show laughs at the Geek community instead of with it.
On the other hand, the people who have been following the sitcom from the beginning of the fact that, it celebrates all the Geeky awesomeness we have to offer.
Both sides, I see your point, but here is MY take on this.
Whether the nay-sayers like it or not, TBBT was a starting platform for Geek culture to have the ability to become mainstream.
No, it wasn't the ONLY platform but it as a platform. Where we saw characters playing D+D, going to comic shops, but most importantly we saw different iterations of what else it means to be Geek/Nerd.
During the 80s and 90s, the stereotypical Geek/Nerd characters were damaging. Take for instance, Steve Urkel, he was odd, clumsy, clownfish, a loner who lved with his mother. Not to mention with a horrible sense of style and just painfully socially awkward.
Now, look at all 4 guys from TBBT: they're all successful in their fields, sure they have their quirks, but they are not completely socially akward, have stable jobs, independent and most are pretty relatable to a wide range of people. Sure they enjoy gaming, and comics, but there is more to them that meets the eye. There have been countless of times, where all of them have shown determination in order to overcome their obstacles to reach their goals. Long gone are the weak Urkels who were never sure of their selves.
We have come along way. And no, I'm not trying to convince you to give the show a try because yes, it still falls under the cheesy sitcom formula that also really doesn't help it's own cause. I also think character development could have been far better.
All that being said, I honestly think it's time to wrap up the show. Unfortunately it is very recurrent in sitcoms that are very popular, the producers try to stretch it out as much as they can due to $$ but the bottom line eventually the storylines start running out and the actors/actresses who portray these characters also end up burning out.
If Jim and Kaley (with the rest of the cast) want to do other projects, then they are entitled because sooner or later, they will end up not performing and the show will get cancelled due to that.
No pun intended but, how about wrapping up some of the issues that are left out and go out with a big bang? ( Yes, I couldn't help myself, so don't judge!)
