Ok, so I meant to have this post publish A LONG while back, but unfortunately, I got struck with a upper respiratory infection that got complicated with my asthma/bronchitis. So, to say that I had a horrible couple of weeks, is an understatement. Coupled with the fact that unfortunately I have to work, well, it's not been easy.
So, kiddies, I apologize sincerely, that I've neglected you guys, but this time, it really wasn't due to boredom, it was due to health.
And yes, I know OTHER films have come out since!
Without further interruptions, here is my review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:
Unlike the first film, where it had much more comedic elements and was light fun, this second installment has a far more serious tone. Its pace is a bit slower for a good part of the movie, due to the build up effect, but once it finally reaches its peak, it goes from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.
The reason its pacing is a bit slow is due to the tensions that is going on with the main plot and the characters' personal story lines. <And yes, it gets personal>
The Guardians are not just dealing with The Sovereign trying to kill our rag tag team due to a slight (thanks, Rocket!), we are also dealing with Ego, Peter's background, Gamora and Nebula's sibling issues. Not to mention Yondu's fall from grace with the Ravagers and Rocket's utter douche-ness. There is so much more to take in this time.
There are similar and different dynamics going on throughout the film, Rocket and Yondu are similar, in that they are trying to maintain a reputation, being distant with those who they probably care most about, due to their inner turmoil, but also because they have made a reputation of being complete douches, and having that taken away from them forces them to, re-evaluate who they REALLY are.
Drax and Mantis, both characters take things literally, and even though sarcasm and other metaphors pass them by, they are also very observant and at a certain point in the film, are crucial to the story <ahem, Mantis>. They form a unique bond, almost like a father/daughter relationship through out the film, and as an audience, we get to see a glimpse of Drax's emotion concerning the loss of his wife and daughter. It is heartbreaking, and reassuring all at the same time.
Nebula & Gamora, duke it out in this film with the sister rivalry?? <if you can call it that, because I don't remember my brother ever tried to kill me, or at least, I wasn't aware, lol> We get an idea where that deep seeded hatred and competitiveness comes from, both for Nebula & Gamora, and by the end of the film, there is an uneasy truce between them. Which we have yet to find out if it will carry on in the next installment of the franchise.
Peter Quill and Ego. This part is basically the glue <Rocket is the catalyst> of the film. Yes, Rocket is the catalyst, but this point drives the rest of the film along. When Peter finds out WHO his actual father is, it gives him a sense of self, and hope that maybe, just maybe he will finally find a place (and person) to call home, aside from his beloved mother. And for a couple of moments, we are led to believe hope that Peter might get more answers, and in a way, I think he gets too many. It is one of those cautionary tales, of "be careful what you wish for", due to the fact that Ego, reveals that not only does he not truly care for Peter, but he was responsible for the death of Quill's mother. This significant detail, gives Peter the final blow and crushes his hope of having a relationship with his father. It is mainly this revelation that gives him the strength to recognize that sometimes "family" isn't always by blood, but can also be by those who truly care for us and CHOOSE to put up with us.
Aaaandd then there is Baby Groot.
Who unlike the first film has a pretty significant part, this film he is used perfectly as a comic relief, in order to break very necessary tension from all the serious personal drama that our heroes go through.
His scenes are well placed and definitely do not come off as gimick-y but totally the opposite, he is beyond adorable and still has a significant point in the plot.
Unlike the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot is not the only one who steals the movie, because Yondu has a uber significant role in this film.
At the end of the first film, he basically lets the Guardians get away, in this film, we find him disgraced and basically his crew (except for one member) mutinies and replaces him as captain with <hmm, Taserface, lol>. Yondu's driving point is that he wants to redeem himself within the Ravagers, so he basically makes it his mission to go after Peter. Until a point in the movie where him and Rocket discuss their inner struggles, and basically admit that they do care about the rest of the Guardians. Rocket even forces Yondu to admit that he grew attach to Peter, and he knew what Ego had in store him. By the end, Yondu comes to terms with this revelation and rescues Quill . By doing so he redeems himself in the eyes of the Ravagers, but also redeems his part in helping Ego, who killed his other children in order to get what he wanted. By not taking Peter to his "father" he not only saved him from death, but he also spared him from knowing ow much of an a*hole his father was.
There were memorable scenes, lines, and yes, it wasn't as light as the first one, but this film had substance. More quality rather than quantity, which in my opinion, is what I like about films.
Yes, I like the action/adventure but there must also be conflict in order for the film to be really really enjoyable, this film, had this and much more. Funny, tender, sad moments that really makes you want to root for these characters.
Overall, I enjoyed the film and can't wait til it comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD.
Did you guys enjoy it?! Let me know in the comments below!
