I do hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with food and loved ones! Except I do hope no one ATE their loved ones, because "Ewwww!"
Hello kiddies! Now that gobble gobble day is well behind us, many are starting to put their various Xmas decorations and most importantly we are gearing up for the release of Rogue One, but before we get there, like many of you I took this past holiday to FINALLY catch up to the rest of the world and go see Dr. Strange in theaters.
And, as many of you can guess, this will be a movie review of sorts.
Normally in my movie reviews I make a list of pros and cons, but in this instance I feel like it deserves something different.
Why? Well it's not like it was devoid of some cons but it had a different feel to the rest of the MCU.
I'll explain:
So far, the MCU has avoided (like the plague, no less) in having to incorporate magic/mysticism in the back stories and rationale of Thor's hammer and other characters that clearly it is present in the MU comics.
That is, until now with the release of phase II, specifically when it is Dr. Strange's origin story. How could they feasibly work it out without ANY magic/mysticism?
TBH, the way they did it was excellent.
The main tragic storyline of how Dr. Strange came to be 'The Sorcerer Supreme,' is incorporated into the film.
Obviously with certain liberties, but the main background story is there. Now, here's the reason why I absolutely loved the deeper far more mature tone of the film.
It deals with various issues, for instance: overcoming adversity despite how difficult you think or it might actually be.
Watching Dr. Strange's transformation from being an arrogant, selfish and prideful individual to a limited, flawed human being in a matter of minutes resonates with many in the audience.
The importance of having a belief (or faith in some way) in oneself, or a mystical/mysticism to help us overcome and understand our inner self is something that mad this film's tone much deeper. Realizing that it wasn't just about him, but he was only one among many, makes Dr. Strange realize how big of a jerk he had been.
Making our protagonist and the antagonist being the two sides of the same coin also added another layer of complexity to the story.
They both share Price, vanity, stubborness, selfishness that limits their viewpoint, at a certain point. The difference is that Stephen actually comes to this realization and is able to learn to expand his viewpoint and learn from his errors.
Something that Kaecilius is never able to understand and is blinded by his own zealotness and stubbornness that he brings his own demise, at the end.
One of the things that I appreciated was that MCU gave the opportunity to the audience to rationalize in their own way, what was going on. Whether it was through science, mysticism or magic, the individual could infer from their own point of view.
I'm definitely not going to get political here but, many of the themes that were brought up could be used as a sort of 'looking glass's of what is happening in the world at the moment. It is fantastic way to have the audience reflect on many issues that need to be reflected upon.
Due to the deeper themes, I strongly do not recommend children under 13 to watch this movie.
Bonus: the movie doesn't have a lot of funny moments but the ones that it does have, they make up for it. 😉
If you still have time and available showings where you are located, definitely go watch it. 100% worth the ticket price!
Til' next time!
