Hello kiddies!!
As promised I'm back from this year's Comikaze Expo. at the L.A. Covention Center.
So, without further delays, here is my review of this year's excellent adventure!
1') Overall Organization- it was well organized, despite being held at a massive place like the L.A. Convention Center. The guide of events and map of the venue was helpful (although, the map was a bit small, that it was hard to read). What made it extremely helpful was that there were signs posted all over the place to guide you and let you make a determination of where you needed to go or be.
Parking, despite being $30 fee, it was secure and worth the cost instead of trying to leave your car parked in public places, but risk being vandalized or ticketed.
2.) Staff & Vendors- The staff working this year was enthusiastic, helpful and overall welcoming. If you had any questions they were ready and willing to help. Staff was able to be identified easily by their bright yellow t-shirts that had "ASK ME" on them. Vendors' booths were organized by sections and numbers in order for us to easily locate them. So, instead of walking aimlessly trying to find out where that one booth you wanted to shop there again, you had a more direct and less time consuming task in trying to simply locate them.
3.) Cleanliness- There was a constant janitorial/cleaning crew that made several sweeps at every area to maintain the atmosphere clean and less cluttered.'
4.) Food- Food was an A++, specially that this year there were food truck vendors that were outside for those attendees who didn't want to spend ridiculous amounts of hard earn $$ on food sold inside the convention center. That is an excellent idea, because it gives attendees opportunities to spend the amount of $$ they would have spent on food on more merchandise.
5.) Cosplayer atmosphere- It was mostly awesome and a positive , respectful atmosphere. What I truly appreciated that there were constant posters reminding guests that "Cosplay does not mean Consent,' which I thought was awesome. But unfortunately there was 2 incidents that somewhat tarnished the atmosphere. My husband tried to ask a cosplayer (politely, mind you) if he would mind taking a picture with him, the cosplayer's response was "BUG OFF" and obviously my husband immediately backed off.
I understand that NOT all cosplayers go to have their picture taken, but this particular person could have been a bit more tactful, because it is not like my husband was stalking him or being forceful. And second, because it really left a bad impression on my husband about this particular cosplayer (obviously he understands that this douche does not mean EVERYONE else) and specially because it was his first time at a con.
There was another incident that i thought was a bit awry, was when a lovely cosplayer was dressed as Wendy Darling (as in Peter Pan) and this guy (parent, because he had his small child with him) basically, instead of using his words to ask, goes ahead and touches "Wendy" on the shoulder to get her attention, and does not even asks her permission, but basically forces his child towards her and points to said child. I don
t know the dinamic between them, but nevertheless I thought it a bit rude and tactless.
But despite those two "bad" experiences, everyone was friendly, and if asking politely and being curteous, most of the time they were very happy to take a picture with us.
Ok, what number did I leave off?? Oh, yes!
6.) Vendors/Booths- Vendors were reasonable and willing to haggle and offer reasonable prices for their merchandise without having to sacrifice their merch. gainings and making the attendees feel cheated. Many of the vendors were very helpful and friendly, which made it easy to strike up a conversation and potentially a good deal. Some where even offering small prizes, stickers, etc. to get attendees' attentions.
7.) Gaming- It might have had something to do that we did go to the gaming room a bit late and probably many gaming booths/vendors had gone for the day, but it was a bit of a let down when we finally did go in. There were some games being played but mainly Yugi-Oh. The game we did get to play was Ascension: Dawn of Champions, which we were told was the latest edition. I won, by the way, Yay!! But we did enjoy the latest edition and the vendor was easy going, so i really can't complain.
Overall, we had so much fun. We bought incredible merch and we are definitely hoping to be able to make it to next year's Comikaze.
And do I recommend going? Yes. But start saving up because you will be buying A LOT of merchandise and before you realize, your revenue will be gone.
See you next year Comikaze!!
Til' next time kiddies, I do hope you enjoyed my review!
