And yes, I am being sarcastic about it.
And, of course this is a post, not so much of a rant, but to raise even MORE awareness in the stream of consciousness in the Geek/Nerd community
We must admit, that it is prominently male oriented and there are a few celebrated Geek/Nerd girls that 1.) are show cased within our community, 2.) are even of some notoriety of sorts.
As a Geek/Nerd Girl, I must admit that I am aware of this phenomenon that is known as a "fake Geek girl," and I will never understand what a "fake" or "true" geek girl is.
Is our Geekiness defined by the amount of collectibles we have?
How many issues of Batman 66, New 52 we have?
or maybe simply, we just enjoy the fandom that we happen to be in?
I've come across article, after article about how our manly counterparts, usually employ the excuse of "fake" Geek girls, because they can't fathom a girl/woman being into the things that are considered for "men" "boys."
Comics, collectibles, cons, psshhh, only desperate 40 year old, male virgins like this "stuff" right?
Um, no, just no.
I happen to like all these things, the only difference is that I have BOOBS.
Like I mentioned there are articles depicting a very subtle, obscure dark side (pun intended) of the Geek/Nerd community, what happens when we come across it, face to face?
Well, today, I was secretly judged by misogynistic men who thought that my place wasn't at their game store.
Yep, I know those who are reading will roll your eyes, or assent with your heads that feeling that we get when we are being covertly judged.
So, I had passed this game store in my city for a while. Never had the opportunity to go in and check it out. Well, that was a bad idea.
(And to top it off, it was one of those rare days in which I decided that I wanted to look somewhat more presentable than the usual.)
From the moment I walked in a felt the staff's eyes of judgement in seeing me walk-in. Specifically from the male staffers that were there.
As soon as I felt their judgmental eyes, I decided to not really venture off to browse. I just sort of browsed the section that was nearest.
None of the staff members ever overtly said anything to me, but their body language and their tone of voice made it clear that I was not going to be taken seriously. Their attitude was guarded and I could almost see in their minds what they were thinking "what is she doing here?" "she doesn't belong here," "is she lost?."
I felt the immediate discomfort, and I was almost compelled to want to take out my none existent Geek/Nerd credential just to make them see that I DID in fact belong there and that I am genuinely into game boards.
I'm sorry that my BOOBS make you uncomfortable and make you feel somewhat threaten by the fact that I am a serious Table Top Gamer. I love D&D, I can quote all three of the Original Star Wars Trilogy (sans Ep. I, II, III, those does count!!). I've been going to cons before they were major, successful events! My favorite Star Trek franchise move of all time is "First Contact," I've tried Earl Grey, hot. I get LOTR references, and I'm completely in love with the 10th Doctor!!!
And NO, my validation for liking the above mentioned fandoms, is not because I want the guy I'm currently with to like me more, so I have to pretend to be into them.
Neither of my significant others, parents, siblings forced me to watch and acquire a liking for science fiction, fantasy, D&D, or other "geek" genres.
This is WHO am I, have always been, and will ALWAYS be.
When you READ about these kind of incidents, you sympathize, but can never understand the impact of the actions, words, until it happens to you.
I've always considered that Geek/Nerd girls are a wonderful assets to our community. We have the potential to bring a different perspective and positive contribution to our fandoms and our community.
We can inspire our future Geeklings to aspire to equal opportunity in the tech, gaming, comic, cos-playing, and entertainment industries.
So, Yes, this is, yet ANOTHER post about sexism within our community, and it is sad that we have to even address this, but it is CRUCIAL that we KEEP talking, addressing this issue, because it needs to STOP now.
The saddest part (I guess, if you can say it is sad, at all) is that by this store judging me for what they thought I was or wasn't, they missed out a great opportunity to have another satisfied customer, who would gladly share the "awesomeness" of this store to other fellow Geeks.
But I guess they did me more the favor, by taking my $$ and potential fellow Geeks, elsewhere.
PS: Sorry, I've been on a mini hiatus with the posting, but I'm back and promise to be more diligent with future entries!!
